“Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going”
Language can be said to be the shortest distance between two people, an attempt to understand and appreciate culture and a chance to possess a second soul. And we live in one world with many countries and innumerable languages!
Along with the knowledge of other languages, each of us must stay true to our roots and know our mother tongue, our ancestral or native language. And to celebrate the linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism 21st February is observed as International Mother Language Day each year since 2000.
International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 17th November 1999. And later in 2007 it was formally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution establishing 2008 as the International Year of Languages.
It was a social movement built on the spirit to defend the rights to write in one's mother language. The date corresponds the day in 1952 when students in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) demonstrating for recognition of their language, Bangla, as one of the two national languages of East Pakistan, were shot and killed by policemen in Dhaka. This day is also called as the “Language Martyr’s Day”
International Mother Language Day events include multicultural festivals which promote the cultural awareness, and tolerance. This year the theme of International Mother Language Day is “Towards Sustainable Futures through Multilingual Education”.
And when we are talking about diverse cultures and multilingualism, we cannot miss India! Hindi and English are the official languages of India and we have 122 major languages and 1599 other languages or dialects! As of today we have 22 official regional languages.
And this linguistic diversity of India is well depicted on over banknotes! Did you know that each note has its value written on it in 17 different languages and scripts!! On the reverse of every note that is printed, the value is written in a column on the left side in 15 languages and in Hindi and English below on left and right corners respectively.
The obverse has the denomination written Hindi and English and on the reverse the language panel has 15 of the total of 22 Official Languages of India.
