Receipt stamp of Hyderabad state

2017-02-13 Mon

Hyderabad was a princely state under the British Raj since 1798. Its royal lineage was ruled by the Nizam dynasty. Hyderabad Post issued its first stamp in 1869 and it was printed in Hyderabad by a plate engraved in London.

Postage stamps are not just a piece of paper; it’s a receipt denoting a specific value or a token of prepayment for post services equivalent to its face value. Over the period of time the original functioning of the stamp was replaced for revenue collection, taxation, celebrating and promoting the events or national heritage.

This Receipt stamp is used for revenue collation and it is acknowledged for multiple payments. This stamp is generally smaller in size than the Court Fees stamp.

In 1871 new definitive stamps were issued. These stamps were printed with the word “Post stamp” and had the denomination written in English. These also were the first stamps with text in four different languages - English, Marathi, Telugu and Urdu. In 1905 the English wording changed to “Postage” and in 1915 it changed to “Post & Receipt”. It indicated that it can be used for numerous fiscal purposes.

From 1947-1949 other stamps were also issued and in September 1948 the Postal system of Hyderabad state joined the Indian postal office. Also like these stamps there were various other stamps for revenue and tax collection. Some such stamp was a bill stamp.
