2017 Hummingbird Green Titanium Coin
2017-01-23 Mon
A new Green Titanium featuring a hummingbird was issued by Pobjoy mint for the British Virgin Islands Government. Tiny hummingbirds have 320 species, weigh less than 2.5 gms and measure three to five inches only, making them the smallest birds on earth. It produces a unique humming sound when it flaps its wings at a very high speed. They can fly at 15 miles per second and are the only birds that can also fly backwards. They have extremely high metabolism rate and conserve energy when food is not available or go into hibernation by slowing its metabolism to 1/15th of its normal rate. The Green Titanium tries to replicate the Green-throated Carib, which is commonly found in the British Virgin Islands. Titanium reacts differently with every strike making each coin unique. The reverse features a hovering hummingbird collecting nectar with other flowers in the background. The obverse features the common portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
The mintage limit of the .990 Fine Green Titanium 10.00 g coin is 7,500. The coins come in a special packaging along with a Certificate of Authenticity.
