Tallow or Animal Fat in England’s new £5 Note Sparks Protests
2016-12-13 Tue
Vegetarians, Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Orthodox Jews are protesting against England’s new polymer £5 note. Almost 130,000 people have signed a petition asking the Bank of England to find a solution to their demand. It seems that the note contains tallow or animal fat which was also admitted by the Bank of England on 28th November. People belonging to religions which are against the killing of animals have refused to use these notes.
The bank officials state that they got to know about this at a later stage and are working on a solution. The English company Innovia Security is supplying the polymer all over the world. The same kind of material is used to make notes of Canada and Australia which has also led to some protests in those countries.
An extremely small amount of tallow is used in an early stage of the production process of polymer pellets, which are used to create the base substrate for the five-pound note. Innovia is now working on solutions to solve this problem as soon as possible.
