This Gold Mohur of Maharaj Umaid Singh of Jodhpur state was minted in 2001/1944 VS/AD.Rao Jodha founded Jodhpur in 1459. The royal throne of Jodhpur was ruled by the Rathore clan. They were originally driven out by Kaunaj due to Afghans invasion. Jodhpur had a very good relationship with Mughal Empire. But during the reign of 6th Mughal Emperor, they felt the need to secure and fortify their capital, that’s how the Sun City was established.
The Gold Mohur belongs to Jodhpur mint. Its obverse depicts inscription ‘George’ and ‘6’ in Persian with ‘Ran’ in Devanagari and the tree symbol. The mark of Daroga is below it. The reverse side features ‘Maharaj Adhiraj Umaid’ with Dagger symbol.
During Colonial period Jodhpur had the largest area in Rajasthan. Under the British Raj, it flourished and its merchants known as ‘Marwaris’ prospered and occupied a dominated role in trade throughout India. Jodhpur is best known for its particular style of riding breeches. This became quite famous in the west later in 19th century
Jodhpur State acceded to the Dominion of India on 14th August in 1947 and merged in the State of Rajasthan Union on 13th March 1949.
