Battle of the Atlantic Remembered on New Canadian Coin

2016-10-21 Fri

Royal Canadian Mint released a $2 circulation coin to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic on 20th October. The ceremony was held on HMCS Sackville, which was the last of 123 Canadian corvettes to sail in the Second World War. Many noted soldiers and veterans of the battle were present at the event.

The Mint officials said that the coin is issued in memory of the brave soldiers of the armed forces and the merchant navy who contributed to the Victory of Canada in the Battle of the Atlantic.

The reverse features a sailor looking into the viewfinder of his anti-aircraft gun, patrolling the skies for threat as a Bristol Beaufighter flies above him. Canadian vessels are also seen in the background along with a pair of maple leaves. Other inscriptions include REMEMBER, 2016, SOUVENIR, and YB for the Bérubé’s initials. Obverses depict a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with inscriptions of ELIZABETH II, D G REGINA, CANADA, and 2 DOLLARS.

Mintage is limited to 5 million and all the coins are available in general circulation. A sealed pack of five coins costs $10. It has a product limit of 75,000 and an ordering limit of 3 per household exclusively for Canadian residents.
