Gold coin of Nasir Al-Din Mahmud Shah I

Nasir Al-Din Mahmud Shah I(862-917; AH 1458-1511) was the sultan of Gujarat. He had struck large number of coins during his reign. Coins which were struck by him are in Gold, silver, and copper. It is said that his gold coin used to strike intermittently.One of his gold half tanka weighs around 5.5 gm. The legend on the coin reads as” Allah Rabbi” meaning ‘Allah the Lord’ with the date 906 within the centre circle and Hamd ba-Mahmud Man Geh ba-'Alam Rasad meaning ‘Blessings received from Mahmud may be spread over the World’ written in the margin and ‘Sikka am az bandagist nusratam az qadir ast’ meaning ‘the coin comes from the slave but the victory comes from god’ on the reverse. Legend of the reverse is arranged in a form of wheel. The legend on the coin is written in Tughra style.
