The Chera dynasty was one of the three great Tamil dynasties of the Sangam age, alongside the Cholas and Pandyas. The Cheras controlled large parts of present-day Kerala and western Tamil Nadu, and their territory was strategically connected to the Arabian Sea trade. Ancient Tamil literature and archaeological evidence testify to their political importance and commercial links with the wider Indian Ocean world.

The coinage attributed to the Sangam Cheras is particularly fascinating for its distinctive symbols. Unlike many later Indian coins that prominently feature inscriptions and portraits, early Chera copper pieces often communicate royal identity through animals and emblematic symbols.
