2026-03-02 Mon

The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) was established on March 23, 1925, with the motto 'Sanghat sa?jayate samdhih' (Strength lies in unity). It was founded by 11 universities during British colonial rule as the Inter-University Board (IUB), an authorised central agency to coordinate and develop higher education in India.

On September 29, 1967, the organisation was registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. In 1973, it was rechristened as the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). This organisation has played a vital role in shaping Indian higher education.

India Post issued a first-day cover and a Rs 5 commemorative stamp on December 22 2025, to commemorate 100 Years of the Association of Indian Universities.
