Saharanpur is an ancient region in present-day Uttar Pradesh with a history that may date back to the BCE era. During the medieval period, the region was under the control of the Delhi Sultans, including Iltutmish and Muhammad bin Tughluq. The Mughals took over in the 16th century, and Akbar established it as an administrative unit within the Province of Delhi. Later, the city was governed by various rulers, such as Nadir Shah, Najib Khan, Ahmad Shah, and Alamgir II.

Between 1758 and 1788, both the Sikh and Maratha Empires attempted to control Saharanpur, but neither succeeded.

In 1788, when Ghulam Qadir Khan ascended the throne of Delhi, he plundered the city and blinded Shah Alam II. In response, Shah Alam II sought assistance from the Marathas. As the Maratha army approached, Ghulam Qadir Khan attempted to flee but was captured and executed.
