Diodotos, a Seleucid satrap of Bactria, revolted against Antiochos II and declared independence. He is known for two types of coinage minted portraying him on the obverse.King Diodotos' gold and silver coins are divided into two groups.
The first group, Diodotos issued with the legend BASILEOS ANTIOKHOU ('of King Antiochos'), features coins similar to those of Antiochos II. These bear a portrait of Diodotos on the obverse. On the reverse, Diodotos replaces the image of Apollo seated on the Omphalos with a depiction of thundering Zeus, and a eagle at his feet.
The second group, inscribed with the legend BASILEOS DIODOTOU ('of King Diodotos'), features both the portrait and reverse type associated with Diodotos, as well as his name.
