Bhakkar is the principal city of Bhakkar District, Punjab, Pakistan, which lies on the bank of the river Indus.

Bhakkar, founded in the 15th Century, was named after a group of colonists from Dera Ismail Khan and was named after Bakhar Khan.

Humayun ruled Bhakkar after the restoration of the Mughal Empire in 1555 CE and appointed Khan Khanan as the city's governor alongside Multan.

According to the historical records, Muhammad Akbar ruled Bhakkar from the Hijri year 983. Copper coins issued by Akbar bear dates AH 983 and AH 985, and silver coins bear the dates AH 984 and AH 985.
