Maha Shivratri, a great night of lord Shiva, is celebrated with devotion across India. Shiva is the energy believed to make every living being alive. The festival is known for "overcoming darkness and ignorance" in life and the world. People remember lord Shiva by chanting prayers, fasting and meditating.

Many of the Emperors and kings were the followers of lord shiva and had issued coins featuring lord shiva.

King Shashanka, the first independent ruler of the Gauda Kingdom, who ruled in Bengal, reigned during the 7th century and issued a gold dinar featuring Lord Shiva on the obverse.
