Makar Sankranti is a pan-Indian Hindu festival celebrated on January 14. It is also known as Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Uttarayan in Gujarat, Peddha Panduga in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The festival is named to honour God Sun or Surya. The festival is observed in the month of Magha as the sun enters Capricorn (on or near January 14 on the Common Era calendar). Being a solar date, it varies by year on the Hindu lunar calendar.The festivities include kite flying, enjoying sesame and jaggery sweets, and community gatherings. It symbolizes new beginnings, prosperity, and togetherness.
