50 Years of NIMHANS

2025-01-09 Thu

The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru is a leading institution in mental health and neurosciences. It originated from the Bangalore Lunatic Asylum, established in 1847, and was later renamed the Mysore State Mental Hospital in 1925, reflecting advancements in mental health care in India.

In the early 20th century, it was one of only two purpose-built asylums in British India, designed to provide a modern healing environment. NIMHANS has played a key role in shaping national mental health policy and advocating for rights-based care.

To honor its contributions, the Department of Posts released a Souvenir Sheet on 30th December 2024 to commemorate 50 years of NIMHANS.
