On This Day in 1958, Dhondo Keshav Karve, was the first social and educational reformer to be honored with the Bharat Ratna.

Also known as Maharshi Karve, he founded the First Women University of India - SNDT Women's University in Mumbai.

India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp in 1958, to honor his contributions and Sacrifices for the upliftment of Women.
