On 24th July 1997, the Twice Interim Prime Minister Gulzarilal Nanda received the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna.He actively participated in India's freedom movement, quitting his teaching profession. He was imprisoned in 1932 and again in 1942 by the British government, remaining detained until 1944.
Nanda, a follower of Mahatma Gandhi, lived by Gandhian principles till the end of his life.
