Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa, was an Indian military officer and diplomat who served as the Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army.  Born in Madikeri, Kodagu, Cariappa had a distinguished military career spanning almost three decades.
He led Indian forces during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947 and was appointed Commander-in-Chief in 1949. He is one of only two Indian Army officers to hold the five-star rank of Field Marshal, the other being Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw.

IndiaPost issued a postage stamp to commemorate Major General K.M Cariappa for his contribution and legacy in the Indian Army.
