Sardar Udham Singh, better known as Sher Singh was born into Sikh family. He was an Indian revolutionary. He was well- known for his role in the Indian independence movement. Sardar was deeply influenced by Bhagat Singh and his revolutionary group.

Michael O'Dwyer, the lieutenant governor of Punjab, ordered to open machine gun fire upon unarmed innocent people gathered at Jallianwala Bagh massacre that killed many children who assembled numbering approx. 20,000 to celebrate the festival of Baisakhi and protesting the arrest of local congress leader. Troops under the command of Colonel Reginal O'Dyer opened fire on the people. Killing people, according to one account 1500.

He shot dead Michael O'Dwyer at Caxton Hall, London.

Ironically, instead of punishing Reginal O'Dyer and others, Sardar was convicted of murder and sentenced to death on this day - 31st July 1940.

India post issued a commemorative stamp in 1992 to honour the martyr.
