Ahilyabai Holkar is considered one of the bravest female rulers in Indian History. She was the Holkar queen of the Maratha Malwa Kingdom.
Khanderao Holkar, a husband of Ahilyabai, was killed in the Battle of Kumbher in 1974. Twelve years later, her father-in-law, Malhar Rao Holkar, died. As there was no authorised ruler to sit on the throne, she was crowned as a queen of the Malwa kingdom.
Ahilyabai Holkar was the great pioneer of Hindu temples and constructed and renovated hundreds of temples and Dharmashalas throughout India. She was also a great administrator. She helped widows to retain their husband’s wealth. She also made sure that widows can adopt a child.
Ahilyabai Holkar was truly a noble ruler and a great queen. A commemorative stamp was issued by India Postage to commemorate her.
