Surendra Sai, Veer Surendra Sai, one of Dharma Singh's seven children, was born on January 23, 1809 in the Village Khinda Bengal Presidency, British India, about 30 kilometres north of Sambalpur in Orissa. Surendra Sai, claims the throne of Sambalpur, rose in revolt against the British even before the 1857. .
Surendra Sai, an Indian freedom fighter and tribal leader, is commemorated on a postage stamp. India the series "India's Struggle for Freedom" was released on December 30, 1986. The first Indian struggle for freedom in 1857 would be incomplete without mentioning Veer Surendra Sai. Though the great revolt of 1857 was put down elsewhere in India by 1858, it continued until 1862 in the region of Sambalpur in Orissa, in large part due to the efforts of Veer Surendra Sai. The British reinforced their men in Sambalpur, but Surendra Sai stayed there despite their attempts. .
