Indira Gandhi was born on 19th November 1917. She was an Indian politician and the central figure of INC. She was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. She studied at Santiniketan, which became Visva-Bharati University in 1951. Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore named her Priyadarshini, and she came to be known as Indira Priyadarshini NehruShe was elected as the president of Indian National Congress in 1959. She was appointed as the member of Rajya Sabha after her father’s death and later became the cabinet minister of Lal Bahadur Shastri as the Minister of Information and Broadcasting. Upon Shastri’s death she defeated her rival Morarji Deaai and became the 3rd Prime Minister of India on 19th January 1964.
During her tenure, she went on a war with Pakistan resulting in India’s victory and formation of Bangladesh. She declared Emergency from 1975 to 1977. She was reelected in 1980.
