Madras Lalitangi Vasanthakumari was a playback vocalist for cinema songs in several Indian languages and a Carnatic musician.The female trinity of Carnatic music is sometimes referred to as Madras Lalitangi Vasanthakumari, D. K. Pattammal, and M. S. Subbulakshmi, three of her contemporaries.
She was one of G. N. Balasubramaniam's most important students and the youngest female recipient of the Sangita Kalanidhi prize among the prominent musicians of the time.
She received the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award given by the Indian government, in 1967. The late K.Srividya, her daughter, was a Tamil and Malayalam actress.
