Copper Shivrai of Shahu Maharaj

Chhatrapati Shahu Bhosale, the fifth Chhatrapati of the Marathas, was born on 18th May 1862 at Mangaon. Shahu was the son of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the successor and eldest son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Yesubai. Shahu Maharaj was taken captive by the Mughals at a very young age and was released to keep the Marathas inclined in a power struggle within them after the death of Emperor Aurangzeb.Shahu Maharaj ruled Satara, his reign power of the Maratha Empire increased, and its influence extended to all corners of the Indian subcontinent. He appointed Bajirao as his Peshwa and won all the battles he fought for the Maratha Empire. It eventually led to a strong Maratha empire during Shahu’s period. Chhatrapati Shahu died on 15th December 1749 at the age of 67.
The above-given coins are the copper coins introduced during the rule of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj. This copper coin weighs 9.7 grams. The obverse side of the coin depicts the Devanagri legend of “Chhatra” and “Pati” with Chhatra having a small tree behind it and three dots behind Pati. On the reverse side of the coin, “Raja” is written with the Fasli Era 12xx above it.
