Swami Karpatri Maharaj was born as Hari Narayan Ojha to the Saryupareen Brahmin family in a village called Bhatni situated in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, India. He got the name Swami Karpatri because he would eat what would come in his palm, 'kara', as the bowl 'p?tra'.
As a child, Swami Karpatri had no interest in worldly matters. He established Dharm Sangh on the day of Vijayadashmi in the year 1940. He travelled through all parts of India and established many branches of Dharm Sangh.
A commemorative postage stamp was issued by the Indian Post on June 29 in memory of Swami Karpatri Ji Maharaj.
