Sir John Alexander Macdonald was the first prime minister of Canada. He served Canada as a prime minister between 1867 and 1873 and 1878 and 1891.
The Bank of Canada issued these banknotes in 12 different denominations under the series, Canadian Dollar banknotes series. These notes were in circulation in Canada between 1989 and 2001.The front side of this banknote depicts the portrait of Sir John Alexander Macdonald and the view of the Parliament of Ottawa to the right. The reverse side of the banknote features Osprey flying over a lake that has just caught a fish.
