Meera Behn Commemorative Stamp

Meera Behn was born on November 22 1892, as Madeleine Slade, in an aristocratic family in England. She was a British supporter of the Indian Independence Movement. She was a resident of England, and despite that, in 1920, she got influenced by the work of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and came to India to work with him. She devoted her entire life to human development and the advancement of Gandhi's principles.In 1932, she accompanied Mahatma Gandhi in Second Round Table Conference. She was an active member of the Satyagraha movement and was imprisoned along with Kasturba Gandhi.
Meera Behn established Sevagram Ashram and worked with the people of Orissa to resist any Japanese invasion in 1942. She was present at the Shimla Conference, Cabinet Mission, Partition of India, Constituent Assembly and the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.
The Government of India issued her commemorative stamp in 1983 to commemorate her and her work.
