The National Bank of Belgium issued 500 Belgian Franc banknotes in 1961 as a part of the Belgian Franc banknotes series. Under the series of Belgian Franc banknotes, 12 different denominations were issued, including this 500 Belgian Francs banknote.

The obverse side of this 500 Belgian Franc features the portrait of Bernard van Orley, a Flemish painter of religious subjects and portraits and designer of tapestries. The reverse side of this banknote features a Portrait of Margaret as a widow painted by Bernard van Orley. Margaret was the Governor of Habsburg Netherland between 1507 and 1515. Later between1519 and 1530, she was again selected as a governor of Habsburg Netherland. She was the first of many female regents in the Netherlands.
