Jose de Sousa Saramago was a Portuguese author born on November 16, 1922. His works allegories, subversive perspective on historic events emphasize the human factor that is theopoetic.

Saramago was the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature in the year 1998 for his book “Parables sustained by imagination. Saramago was a founding member of the National Front for the Defense of Culture in Lisbon in 1992. His books were translated into more than 25 languages.

Jose de Sousa was awarded the Camoes Prize in 1995. In 2005 he was awarded the America Award. He founded the Jose Saramago Foundation in June 2007, located in the city of Lisbon.

Saramago died on 18th June 2010 before he was expected to speak at the European Writer’s Parliament. He suffered from leukaemia. A book named ’Skylight’ from his archives was published posthumously in 2011.

The above-given stamp is a commemorative stamp issued to honour of Jose Saramago for winning The Nobel Prize. This stamp was issued by Portugal, on December 15 1998. The stamp is multicolour and has a size of 12 x 12 and a half.
