Today Jharkhand state celebrates its foundation day. On 15 November 2000, Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar after the Parliament passed the Bihar Reorganization Act. Jharkhand is the the15th largest state of India, known for its hilly and holy landscape. The capital of this state is Ranchi.

The day coincided with the birth anniversary of tribal leader Birsa Munda also known as Bhagwan Birsa. Birsa Munda was an Indian freedom fighter and a tribal leader belonging to Munda Tribe. Birsa Munda was born on 15 November 1875, in Ulihatu village in present-day Jharkhand, in a tribal Munda family. He spent his childhood moving from one place to another with his parents.

Indian post issued the commemorative stamp on this legendary personality in 1988.
