The 500 Portuguese Escudos were in circulation in Portuguese between 1997 and 2002. The Banco de Portugal issued Portuguese Escudo banknotes in 6 different denominations, including this 500 Portuguese Escudos banknote. The obverse side of 500 Portuguese Escudos depicts the bust of Joao de Barros, the first great Portuguese historian, facing the left, to the left side of the note. The words "Banco de Portugal" is printed on the center top side of this paper note.

The reverse side of this note depicts the scene from life in India, symbolizing a man of science and letters and a merchant, with naus as background.
