The Banco Central Do Brasil issued this note on Machado de Assis in 1987.Machado de Assis was born on 21 June 1839. He was the pioneer Brazilian novelist, poet, playwright and short story writer; widely regarded as the great writer of Brazilian literature. In 1897 he founded the Brazilian Academy of Letters and served as its first president. He is considered the greatest and most complete man of letters in Brazil.
The front side of this note depicts writer and playwright Machad on the right side of the note. On the left side emblem of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, a handwritten excerpt from chapter XXXII - The Retired, from one of his books, Esaú and Jacó (1904). The back side of the note depicts a Representative print of Primeiro de Março Street, in Rio de Janeiro.
The notes were withdrawn from circulation in 1989.
