On 31st March 1988, Bhutan issued a miniature sheet featuring the Japanese Shinkansen Tokaido (Bullet Train) passing Mt Fuji.On 25th January 2005, the king of Bhutan and the prime minister of India conducted a feasibility study for rail links. The proposed rail plan included Hasimara to Phuentsholing, with a branch to Pasaka; Kokrajhar to Gelephu; Pathsala to Naglam; Rangia via Darranga to Samdrup Jongkhar and Banarhat to Samtse.
The transportation system of Bhutan comprises roads and 4 airports. There is no rail network and no ports due to the landlocked country in Bhutan. The road network is stretched to 8000 Kilometre.
The king of Bhutan approved the final plan to build an 18 Kilometre long rail route in December 2009. The rail link is Indian Broad Gauge wide between Hashimara in West Bengal and Toribari in Bhutan. Soon, the rail network will be constructed via Satali, Bharna Bari and Dalsingpara by Indian Railways.
