The National Bank of Romania issued 5 Romanian Lei Bank in 2005. These banknotes are part of the current Romanian Lei banknote series; they are still in circulation.

The front side of this banknote depicts the image of Romanian composer George Enescu. George Enescu was a great Romanian composer, violinist, conductor and teacher. He is considered one of the great musicians in Romanian history, best known for his interpretations of Bach and his eclectic compositions. He devoted his life to the development of musical life in Romania.

In 1912, he founded Enescu Prize for Romanian composers. He founded George Enescu Symphony Orchestra in 1917, and later in 1921, he founded Romania’s first national opera company.
