Hero of Minas Conspiracy on Brazil Coin

Issued in the year 1988, this 5 Centavos Coin of Brazil commemorated the martyr of an early independence movement known as the Minas Conspiracy.

Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, known as Tiradentes, was a leading member of the Brazilian revolutionary movement known as the Inconfidencia Mineira whose aim was full independence from the Portuguese colonial power and to create a Brazilian republic. When the plan was discovered, Tiradentes was arrested, tried, and publicly hanged. Since the 19th century, he has been considered a national hero of Brazil and patron of the Military Police.

The obverse depicts Joaquim Jose da Silva Xavier, martyr of an early independence movement known as the Minas Conspiracy. The country name above, lines (1998-2007: 12 lines, 2007 - now: 13 lines) underneath the portrait. In the background, there is a triangle, a symbol of the movement, and a dove, a symbol of peace and freedom.

The reverse features Numerical denomination and date surrounded by geometric patterns, a 3/4 globe, and Southern Cross.
