Edmond Halley was an English astronomer, geophysicist, mathematician, metrologist, and physicist. He was the first to calculate the orbit of a comet later named after him. He is best known for predicting the orbit; of the comet later named after him.

Edmond Halley was the second astronomer royal in Great Britain after John Flamsteed. Edmond Halley was a man of many accomplishments, designed several inventions, and was an intrepid discoverer. In 1684, he met Issac Newton in Cambridge for the first time. Edmond Halley played a prominent role in helping Issac Newton; in the development of the theory of gravitation and the writing of the Principal and even paid for the book's publication.
