Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis Commemorative Stamp

Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis was an Indian scientist and statistician. He was a physicist by training, a statistician by instinct, and a planner by conviction. He is best remembered for Mahalanobis distance and instrumental formulation of India’s strategy for industrialization in the Second Five-Year Plan (1956–61).Statistical science was a virgin field and practically unknown in India before the twenties. The developing statistic was like expanding new territory. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis was the founder of the Indian Statistical Institute and contributed to the design of large-scale sample surveys. He made pioneering studying in anthropometry in India.
The Government of India issued this commemorative stamp in 1993 to commemorate him and his work.
