The National Bank of Belgium issued Belgian Franc banknotes depicting the famous Belgium painter James Ensor. James Ensor was a renowned figure in Belgium during the late 19th century and 20th century.

James Ensor got most of his inspiration from his family souvenir shop and the seaside resort of Ostend to produce colourful paintings populated with masked figures and skeletons. His work was much ahead of his time but was misunderstood by people, leaving work hurt and tormented. Today, James Ensor is considered a real pioneer of modern art.

The National Bank of Belgium issued this 100 Belgian Francs banknote depicting James Ensor on the obverse side. This banknote was issued in 1995, and they are still in circulation.
