Narodowy Bank Polski issued 500 Polish Zloty banknotes depicting Nicolaus Copernicus in 1971.
Nicolaus Copernicus was a mathematician and astronomer. He formulated a model of the universe that placed the Sun rather than Earth at its center. He published a book 'De revolutionibus orbium coelestium' just before his death in 1543 which turned to be a major event in the history of science. He was the first person to give the idea of heliocentrism—the idea that the Earth orbits the sun, rather than the sun orbiting the Earth. Nicolaus Copernicus fulfilled the Renaissance ideal.
