The National Bank of Georgia issued this 5 Georgian Lari depicting Ivane Javakhishvili in 2002. The National Bank of Georgia issued such notes that depict Ivane Javakhishvili in seven different denominations. These notes are still in circulation.

Ivane Javakhishvili was a founding father of Tbilisi State University (1918) and its rector from 1919 to 1926. He was a Georgian and Soviet historian and linguist voluminous works heavily influenced the modern scholarship on the history and culture of Georgia. Ivane Javakhishvili authored around 170 works that deal with various aspects of Georgia's political, cultural, social, and economic history. His work A History of the Georgian Nation has remained the most comprehensive and impressive on pre-modern Georgian history.
