Niue Mint Marks Roswell’s 75th Anniversary

On July 8, 1947, the US Army Air Force base in Roswell, New Mexico, issued a statement saying that it had recovered the wreckage of a “flying disc.” Shortly thereafter, the USAAF claimed that the debris was really from a weather balloon, igniting the most controversial and best-known incident in the history of “UFOs.”

Niue celebrates the anniversary with a 2022 Proof 1-ounce .999 fine silver one dollar and Proof 1-ounce .9999 fine gold 100 Dollar coins. The reverse of the coin depicts a beautiful view of the Flying Saucer in the background and an alien in the foreground. On the reverse, the inscription: “ROSWELL NEW MEXICO 1947” - the name of the coin, the location, and the year of the discovery.

The obverse of the coin depicts the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions: “ELIZABETH II” – the name of the Queen, “NIUE” – the issuing country, “2022” – the year of issue, the face value and the weight and the fineness of the metal.
