The dong has been the currency of Vietnam since 3 May 1978. The word dong is from the material which the pennies were made (bronze). The term refers to bronze coins used as currency during the dynastic periods of China and Vietnam.

As the inflation hit, Vietnam bank-issued higher denominations of banknotes such as 200, 1,000, 2,000, and 5,000, and by 2006 a 200,000 dong note was issued which was nominated for the Banknote of the Year Award in 2007.

The Vietnam 200,000 Dong Banknote from 2006 was part of the 2006-2016 series that featured a portrait of Ho Chi Minh. Its obverse side features the coat of arms of Vietnam and former Prime Minister Ho Chi Minh, while the reverse side features a boat along with the Ha Long Bay rock formations.
