Waldemar Mordechai Wolff Haffkine was a Ukrainian scientist and a bacteriologist. He worked mainly in India and developed vaccines against cholera and bubonic plague.Waldemar M.Haffkine; is recognized as the first microbiologist who developed and used vaccines against cholera and bubonic plague. Waldemar M.Haffkine received his early education in Berdiansk. When he entered the university, he was influenced by Professor Elie Metchnikoff and developed an interest in unicellular organisms. He completed his degree in Natural Science and got the job of assistant at the Zoological Museum of Odessa, with the use of a research laboratory.
In 1889, he moved to Paris and started working in Pasteur's world-famous laboratory. He was invited by the Governor of Bombay after an epidemic of plague broke out in the city. In Bombay, he worked with JJ Group of Hospitals where he developed a plague vaccine.
