Thiruvalluvar, also known as Valluvar, is a celebrated Tamil poet and philosopher. He is best known for his work Tirukkural (Sacred Couplets), a masterpiece of human thoughts. Tirukkural has about 1330 couplets, divided into 133 sections of 10 couplets each.

The book reveals massive information about ethics, politics, economics, and love. This book is also called as Fifth Veda or Bible of Tamil Land. A poet from the Sangam period, Mamulanar has mentioned that Thiruvalluvar was a great Tamil scholar and poet.

Thiruvalluvar is also credited with the writing of texts on medicine, Gnana Vettiyan, and Pancharathnam. These have contributed to Tamil science, literature, and ayurvedic medicines.
