2022-05-16 Mon

Sputnik was a series of artificial Earth satellites. Sputnik III was the third artificial satellite of the earth launched by the USSR on May 15, 1958. It was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome by a modified R-7/SS-6 ICBM. Sputnik III was the only satellite launched in 1958.

The satellite was launched successfully on the morning of May 15, specifically chosen as it was the anniversary of the R-7's maiden flight. This satellite was launched to study several geophysical and physical problems with the aid of the instruments taken up by the sputnik to great heights.

This commemorative stamp was by Tanzania on the satellite Sputnik III in 2009.
