Prafulla Chandra Ray was a chemist, educationist, historian, industrialist, and philanthropist. He is considered the “Father of chemical science in India”.

Prafulla Chandra Ray is well known as an Indian scientist. In 1896, he discovered the stable compound mercurous nitrite. He also established Bengal Chemical and Pharmaceutical Works Ltd, India’s first pharmaceutical company, in 1901.

Prafulla Chandra Ray was a great teacher, a great man, and a true patriot. He was a pioneer in the field of the pharmaceutical industry. He was a passionate and devoted social worker; he did not support the caste system.

This commemorative stamp was issued by the Indian Government in 1961 to commemorate him and his work.
