Rajendra Chola I, was the son of Rajaraja Chola I, the great Chola king of South India. Rajendra Chola I is also known as Rajendra the Great, also known as Gangaikonda Chola. He was one of the greatest emperors of Chola Dynasty. He succeeded his father in 1014 CE and ruled it until 1044 CE. After sitting on the throne of the Chola Empire, Rajendra Chola expanded his kingdom up to the banks of the river Ganges in the north and across the ocean.

During the reign of Rajendra Chola, the Chola Empire was the most important dynasties of South Asia. After defeating Gangas, Chalukyas, Cheras, Palas, Pandyas, Kalinga and other rules he assumed title ‘Gangaikonda Chola’ (The Chola who took the Ganges). He is also known with various other names like Mudigonda Chola, Virarajendra, and Pandita Chola, apart from inheriting the title of ‘Mummudi Chola’ (The Chola with three crowns) from his father.
