Dhondo Keshav Karve, also known as Maharshi Karve, was a social reformer in India in the field of women's welfare. Dhondo Keshav Karve was the pioneer in women's empowerment and promoting widows' education in India. He advocated widow remarriage and married a widow. Dhondo Keshav Karve founded the first women's university in India - SNDT Women's University.
Dhondo Keshav Karve wrote two biographies; ?tmawrutta (1928) in Marathi and Looking Back (1936) in English. In 1958, the Government of India awarded him the highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, on the year of his 100th birthday.
The Government of India issued this commemorative stamp to commemorate him and his work in 1958.
