Russian Emperor Peter I or Peter the Great ruled the Tsardom of Russia and later the Russian Empire for more than 4 decades. Through a number of successful wars, he expanded the Tsardom into a much larger empire that became a major European power.

He also laid the groundwork for the Russian navy. He is also known for founding and developing the city of Saint Petersburg, which remained the capital of Russia until 1917.

This ½ Rubel coin depicts the portrait of the king facing right on the obverse and a crowned two-headed eagle with his wings wide-spread on the reverse.
