The postal region of the Netherlands is located in North-West Europe and comprises the whole territory of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Four other postal regions exist in the kingdom: Aruba, the Caribbean Netherlands (Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba), Curaçao and Sint Maarten.

The foundation of the Dutch State Post took place in 1752, and the first Postal Act was confirmed in 1807. The first stamp of the Netherlands came out in public in the year 1852. The First stamp of the country came with the denomination of Five Cents and was issued on 1st January 1852.

This stamp is in Light Steel Blue color and depicts right facing bust of King William – III. The early stamps do not have the name of the country inscribed on them. Instead, all the postage stamps were inscribed with only "POST ZEGEL" (English: "POSTAGE STAMP") and the denomination.
